OREANDA-NEWS. Vale held the official opening of the Totten Mine, in the city of Sudbury, in Canada, on Friday, February 21. The ceremony was attended by dignitaries and local leaders, such as the Prime Minister of the province of Ontario, Kathleen Wynne, the Minister of Northern Development and Mines, Michael Gravelle and even members of the Sagamok Anishnawbek First Nation community.

"The Totten Mine is the first to be opened in the Sudbury Basin in more than 40 years and represents a significant investment in the future of our operations throughout Canada,” stated Peter Poppinga, Executive Director of Base Metals and Information Technology at Vale. "Opening this mine further strengthens our confidence in our base metal assets and will add value to all our business activities. We are committed to the future of our operations in Canada and to our base metal business. We are delighted to have the opportunity to celebrate this historic moment for our company and the community,” enthused Poppinga, who also serves as President of Vale in Canada.

Prime Minister Wynne, along with Minister Gravelle, also cut the unit's inaugural ribbon and visited the Totten control room, which boasts cutting-edge technology. “The mine will generate employment and help promote economic growth in the region and beyond. I would like to thank Vale for strengthening Ontario's position as a global mining power whilst also respecting our environment and the local communities,” she said.

Further details about the Totten Mine

Situated in Worthington, some 40 kilometres to the west of our Copper Cliff complex, the Totten Mine will produce copper, nickel and precious metals over the next 20 years and provide employment for approximately 200 people.
