ArcelorMittal: Innovative Safety Barrier Receives CE Marking
OREANDA-NEWS. February 13, 2014. Mieres Tubos (Grupo Condesa) and ArcelorMittal Flat Carbon Europe have worked together on the design and creation of safety barriers combining new materials – high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel and the metallic coating Magnelis®.
Mieres Tubos, manufacturer of the safety barriers, has recently been accredited with CE marking for two products included in this collaboration. Bureau Veritas, a leading testing, inspection, and certification company, has recognised their compliance with essential requirements of the relevant European health, safety and environmental protection legislation.
The two certified products are:
N2W4 - certified as BMSRA4/C-MT(MG), a safety barrier system made of high-strength low-alloy steel
Magnelis® (ZM310) – ArcelorMittal’s metallic coating that ensures optimal surface protection against long-term wear and tear
The co-engineering partnership between Mieres Tubos and ArcelorMittal dates back to May 2011 and now is celebrating its latest success with this prestigious safety certification.
Safer and sustainable safety barriers
The use of HSLA steels combined with the metallic coating Magnelis® is creating safer, sustainable, and cost effective safety barriers.
Key qualities of HSLA steels are:
Better control of mechanical properties compared to traditional structural steels, providing an optimal safety solution
Weight reduction (up to 25%), reducing greenhouse gas emissions, as less steel is required. As a result, more final products can be transported to the installation site
Reduced maintenance cost
Increased corrosion protection with Magnelis®
The superior performance of Magnelis®, the steel metallic coating made with zinc, aluminium (3.5%), and magnesium (3%), protects safety barriers against corrosion while maintaining mechanical properties.
The coating has been extensively tested in salt spray test and outdoor tests (see images below). Tests also show that the behaviour in soil and concrete is superior compared with traditional heavy zinc coating.
Magnelis®, which uses less zinc than pure zinc coatings, thereby considerably reducing zinc runoff in the soils, comes with a twenty-year warranty for safety barriers.
Two other safety barrier systems using Magnelis® have been - or are in the process of being - certified by Mieres Tubos:
N2W5 certified as BMSNA4/C-MT(MG) commercial name in S280GD+ZM310
H1W5 (BMSRA2/C-MT) developed in 2013, certification process underway
