OREANDA-NEWS. Copenhagen Airport is off to a good start to the year with passenger numbers up 4% in January. Istanbul, last year's fastest riser on the top-ten list out of Copenhagen, is still in vogue.

With 4.2% more international passengers and 2.6% more domestic passengers, Copenhagen Airport was busier than normal this January.

A total of 1,644,623 passengers travelled through the airport in January, 63,852 more than in the same month of last year.

“January is traditionally one of the more quiet months of the year at Copenhagen Airport. So 4% growth in passenger numbers is a good start to 2014,” said Copenhagen Airport's CEO Thomas Woldbye.

“And we are also pleased to see domestic growth of 2.6% after a couple of lean years following the Cimber Sterling bankruptcy. The market looks to have stabilised,” said Woldbye.

Istanbul in top ten

Istanbul, last year's fastest riser on the top-ten list of the most popular destinations out of Copenhagen, continues to attract travellers.

Last year, the services between Copenhagen and Istanbul enjoyed aggregate growth of 17.3% to 431,413 passengers, and the improvement continued this January, with a further increase of 17.3%.

“It is quite impressive how Istanbul has invested for success, not only as a destination, but also as a hub. That underlines how important it is for us here in Copenhagen to focus on and invest in retaining and expanding Copenhagen Airport as the key hub of northern Europe,” said Woldbye.
