Power Grid Ice Disaster Prevention Project Wins National Award
OREANDA-NEWS. January 31, 2014. CPC Central Committee and the State Council held the National Science and Technology Awards Conference in Beijing.
The project declared by SGCC - “key technology and system equipment of large-scaled power grid ice disaster prevention and control”, won the first prize of 2013 National Award for Science and Technology Progress. Dr. Lu Jiazheng from State Grid Electric Power Research Institute of Hunan Electric Power Company accepted the award as the team leader of the project. SGCC also won three second prizes for “key technology and scale application of the very large power grid integrated dispatching and control system”, “key technology and application of large-scale wind power integration and detection” and “key technology and application of safety and environmental control of deep excavation in soft soil”.
Since 2003, the company has received 43 national S&T awards, including one special prize and five first prizes, leading in number and grade among central enterprises. It shows that SGCC firmly insists on technology development strategy of constructing an innovative company and actively promoting “One First-class, Four Larges" and marks the conspicuous increase on the company's technological innovation strength and excels in technology instead of simply following the trend.
Ice disasters of power grid appear in more than 100 countries and over 10 provinces in South China. It can cause tripping, tower falling or even large-scale grid paralysis, knowing as one of the biggest disasters of grid safe operation. Due to the lack of systematic ice disaster prevention technologies and efficient de-icing equipment, in early 2008 China's power grid suffered the most serious damage due to the ice disaster, seriously affecting the normal social order. With the support from national science and technology program, SGCC gathered a large number of researchers into the “key technology and system equipment of large-scaled power grid ice disaster prevention and control” project. They worked hard day and night and finally achieved a series of results regarding theory, technology and equipment, making a major breakthrough and substantive innovation.
Firstly, they created a grid icing forecasting technique, revealed the causes, proposed the long, medium and short-term forecasting methods and developed the world's first grid icing forecast and warning system which wins valuable anti-icing time because of accurate prediction. Secondly, they mastered the icing automatic monitoring technology on transmission lines, solved the problem of automatically identifying the ice thickness and provided clear, real-time icing information. Thirdly, they invented a series of highly efficient DC de-icing equipment, proposed a new and efficient DC de-icing topology theory and developed a low harmonic and wide voltage regulator rectifier transformer. DC de-icing equipment has advantages in both performance and price, which can effectively prevent the tower from falling and line from breaking. Fourthly, they have found the highly reliable anti-icing flash composite insulators that significantly increase the anti-icing flash voltage and broke through the key technology of anti-icing flash power outage.
The project has been widely used in 1023 lines in 8 southern provinces which can be easily covered by ice and has successfully coped with 33 grid ice disasters of different levels since 2009, fully proving its anti-icing ability. The project harvested 10 invention patents and over 160 articles of SCI and EI papers and was highly praised by internationally renowned experts with its international leading technology. What’s more, the project has saved billions of anti-icing reconstruction funds, increased power supply of over 10TWh, kept grids worth hundreds of billions safe, ensured the big grid’s safe operation, and guaranteed the power supply for households and production. The project has also constructed a complete grid anti-icing technology system so that we can calmly deal with ice disasters, achieving a leap development of grid anti-icing technology.
SGCC now is building a number of internationally advanced smart grid projects, maintaining a leading position in the field of UHV transmission, smart grid, large grid security and new energy utilization, striving to produce a number of national and world-class innovations,, achieving technical trend-leading instead of technical transcendence, leading the direction of smart grid technology development and promoting the accelerated transformation of energy production and consumption patterns.
