DHL Introduces More Comprehensive Carbon Accounting
OREANDA-NEWS. January 31, 2014. Deutsche Post DHL, the world’s leading postal and logistics company, further enhances its portfolio of GOGREEN services. By adopting the internationally recognized ‘GHG Protocol Product Lifecycle Accounting and Reporting Standard’, Deutsche Post DHL now ships its worldwide GOGREEN products 100% climate neutral.
For CO2, the main greenhouse gas generated by transport services, accounting and reporting will continue. In addition, Deutsche Post DHL will now also collect data on other relevant greenhouse gases, such as methane and nitrous oxide. By adopting and implementing the new standards, Deutsche Post DHL expands its quantification and reporting to the upstream emissions generated by the production and transport of energy and fuel.
The changes will also apply to the GOGREEN product category “Carbon Report”. In line with this new standard customers will benefit from greater transparency. Carbon Reports for DHL Express and DHL Global Forwarding and Freight customers will also be generated in compliance with the current European standard EN 16258 (Calculation and declaration of energy consumption and GHG emissions of transport services).
Related transparency for Carbon Accounting
Overall, Deutsche Post DHL customers benefit from the possibility to even better manage environmental-impacts and related costs and, by taking advantage of the GOGREEN climate neutral service, customers can further increase their contribution to climate protection. The expanded product options are verified annually by the external audit company Societe Generale de Surveillance (SGS).
In addition to the Carbon Reports, Deutsche Post DHL also provides GOGREEN products and services in two additional categories: “Green Optimization” and “Climate Neutral”. Green Optimization focuses on the entire supply chain of the business customer. Deutsche Post DHL contributes its comprehensive carbon-efficiency know-how and advises customers, for example, on adjustments to delivery services and transport routes. In the case of Climate Neutral, emissions generated by the transport/processing of goods and documents are offset through recognized climate protection projects.
Related transparency for Carbon Accounting is improved as well with the implementation of the ‘GHG Protocol Corporate Value Chain Accounting and Reporting (Scope 3) Standard’ at Deutsche Post DHL. All greenhouse gas emissions from transports and further processes such as the production of fuel and energy are calculated and reported according to the GHG Protocol. Thus Deutsche Post DHL ensures consistency of GOGREEN products and services and its carbon footprint.
