OREANDA-NEWS. The Lufthansa Aviation Center (LAC) at Frankfurt Airport was honoured five years ago, on 2nd February 2009, by the EU for its energy efficiency. As one of the first buildings in Germany, since then it has been able to refer to itself as a "Green Building". The Lufthansa Group is constantly working to reduce energy consumption and improve environmental efficiency. In doing so, the Group not only invests in a modern, environmentally-efficient and quiet fleet. The company's buildings also set standards.

The Lufthansa staff moved into the LAC, an ultra-modern office building, in July 2006. It requires, thanks to an innovative structure consisting of thermally-active fair-faced concrete ceilings, a sensitive shade automation system and a highly insulated facade, only about one-third of the heating energy of a conventional office building. As a result, the heating energy consumption of the LAC is 56 percent below the specifications of the currently valid Energy Saving Ordinance. With respect to electricity consumption it is 17 percent less. Thanks to the building's low energy concept, Lufthansa relieves the Rhine-Main region of around 12,000 tons of CO2 each year.

In its key points, the Group's strategic environmental programme requires that in planning, construction and redevelopment of buildings within the Lufthansa Group, the latest energy-saving and sustainable aspects are taken into account. Further examples of sustainable construction and operation in the Group are the Lufthansa Training & Conference Center in Seeheim, which is supplied with energy by a geothermal energy system from deep underground, as well as the new building satellite currently under construction at Munich Airport. It is designed according to the principles of sustainable construction, as a result of which its carbon footprint is 40 percent better than that of the two existing terminals.
