Latvian Government Headed by Laimdota Straujuma Starts Work
OREANDA-NEWS. January 24, 2014. At the extraordinary sitting of the Saeima, a vote of confidence was given to the newly formed Cabinet of Ministers that will be headed by Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma.
The new government will work in the following composition: Minister for Defence Raimonds Vejonis, Minister for Foreign Affairs Edgars Rinkevics, Minister for Economics Vjaceslavs Dombrovskis, Minister for Finance Andris Vilks, Minister for the Interior Rihards Kozlovskis, Minister for Education and Science Ina Druviete, Minister for Culture Dace Melbarde, Minister for Welfare Uldis Augulis, Minister for Transport Anrijs Matiss, Minister for Justice Baiba Broka, Minister for Health Ingrida Circene, Minister for Environmental Protection and Regional Development Einars Cilinskis and Minister for Agriculture Janis Duklavs.
Also President Andris Berzins participated in the first formal sitting of the new government held on Wednesday, January 22. In his address to the new government he emphasized that he expects constructive work rather than populism in view of forthcoming elections this year.
Prime Minister L.Straujuma stressed the need for the new government to work as a team and for the benefit of the state. "I hope that we all understand and will work in compliance with the inscription in the hall of the government sittings "One law, one justice for everyone!" said the Head of the Government.
The newly formed Cabinet of Ministers will continue the policy commenced by the previous government that will be based on principles of economic growth, strict fiscal responsibility, sustainability and social solidarity, as well as the principle of mutual cooperation among the sectors.
The term of office of the present government is equal to the term of office of the current Saeima, i.e. until parliamentary elections to be held in October 2014.
