OREANDA-NEWS. Tata Power, India's largest integrated power company, is committed towards resource conservation, energy efficiency, environment protection and sustainability. In line with its Greenolution's philosophy, the Jojobera team has undertaken various sustainable initiatives to contribute towards a greener environment and biodiversity in Jojobera. The objective of this initiative is to ensure that all employees practice and contribute towards sustainability and support resource management within the organisation. To encourage employees and consumers to be an integral part of this movement the company also has an official website 'www.greenolution.co.in'.

Team Jojobera with more than 280 employees volunteered under various committees for undertaking sustainability initiatives. These committees work towards mapping and monitoring carbon footprint and encourage 100 percent recycled paper usage, tree plantation at all plants and site locations, saving water and fuel, waste management, as well as energy conservation and efficiency programmes. Regular brainstorming meetings are conducted to discuss and share creative thoughts and ideas, finalise the programmes, calculate the impact and decide on the way forward. In a highly successful tree plantation drive, 70 saplings have been planted by employees inside the plant premises, whereas 75 saplings have been distributed amongst employees. More than 20 pictorial posters on water conservation and its benefit were posted at the plant campus in Hindi and English. The team also displayed 61 water conservation slogans at drinking water points in Hindi.

Speaking on the initiative, DS Kudalkar, head, Jojobera station, Tata Power, said, “We at Tata Power work towards sustainable development and believe that this is imperative for the growth of a developing economy like India. All our resource management and sustainability programmes aim towards a clean and green future. We are creating a mark by implementing simple methods which we hope will have an impact on the society. The hard work put in by Tata Power employees and volunteers is commendable and demonstrates their commitment towards this green cause.”

To create awareness on fuel saving, the company re-routed the buses to cover more employees and distributed leaflets on fuel conservation tips. An energy conservation drive was conducted with the Club Enerji initiative outside the plant area and witnessed sensitisation of more than 1,300 students, whereas 2,000 stickers were put up at different locations across the plant. Employees from Tata Motors also delivered speeches on energy conservation during National Energy Conservation week. Employees were motivated to participate in 'clean your city' drive, reduce air travel and use webcast / video conferencing facilities. The company takes wastage of paper extremely seriously and has implemented a waste management disposal system where used paper has to be segregated into three bins, ie, one side written paper, both side written paper and unwanted but confidential paper. The team also tracks the consumption of paper used for photocopy.

A special 'plastic-free environment' committee is also working towards reducing the use of plastic bags amongst employees. The company has distributed jute bags to all the employees and has also banned the use of plastic bags in the office cafeteria. Over 40 display boards have been mounted to avoid the use of plastic bags while creating awareness about plastic hazards.

The company also motivated employees on 'e-waste management and solid waste management'. Over 400kg of e-waste was identified and auctioned by the committee. For educating employees and stakeholders, every week the team organises training programmes to sensitise on how to reduce, reuse and recycle solid waste. To encourage the systematic disposal of waste, the committee has increased the number of waste bins in and around the plant and has done colour coding of bins. The team makes innovative use of such scrap material by reusing them as drain cover and panton (boat) for continuous cleaning of the ash pond.

Going forward the company plans to continue with tree plantations and distribute saplings on employees' birthdays and also undertake initiatives for water and energy conservation. Through its Greenolution initiative, Tata Power intends to put efforts / practices / programmes that infuse the belief of sustainability as a movement into place by making all stakeholders a part of it.
