NPO Saturn Presented Solution for Visualizing Engineering Data
OREANDA-NEWS. NPO Saturn and the P.A. Solovyev Rybinsk State Aviation Technological University (RGATU) presented their very own solution that allows managing the presentation of engineering data at the main event of the supercomputer industry - the SC international exhibition which was held in Denver, USA from 18 to 21 November 2013.
“At this moment the supercomputer industry ecosystem is going through its development stage; we are talking not only about the hardware components - processors, memory, engineering systems but also about various software solutions - both for managing computations and those of applied type, - commented Yuriy Zelenkov, NPO Saturn chief information officer. - A vital role in that process is also given to the applications used for data presentation; the obtained results need to be presented in an appropriate way, this serves as the starting point in decision-making.”
The traditional approach to preparing presentations prescribes following a predefined scenario - a sequence of slides. Any deviation from that scenario causes difficulties especially if one has to switch over to specific applications used for data visualization such as Paraview. The Presentator system devised by NPO Saturn conjointly with RGATU allows the user to interact with such software products as MS PowerPoint, VLC Player or Paraview from a tablet running on the Android operating system. Through a wireless link, a tablet connects to a PC which is equipped with all the above-mentioned programs, in the meantime the user using an intuition-driven touch interface can skip from one window to another and manage the content inside each system which facilitates interaction with the complex and anisotropic software.
“This system originated as an internal-use application, - shared Yuriy Zelenkov, - the development was carried out by the company's employees and RGATU students following the specifications drafted by NPO Saturn. We first demonstrated this product at the MAKS-2013 air show when presenting the design of our engines. We discovered that the application itself drew a lot of attention and that prompted the idea of demonstrating it to the supercomputer community as an independent product. The idea was then supported by RSK, a company that allocated us some space at their exhibition stand in Denver.”
Ever since 1988 the United States have played host to the SC-series exhibition and conference; this is rated as the biggest event in the supercomputer industry bringing together not only the OEM's and suppliers but also research institutions and universities. “The reaction of the researchers and university professors was of paramount importance to us, - adds Yuriy Zelenkov, - in fact it was the first target audience to assess our system. The bottomline is that there is interest in our application, and we are already clear about some ways of further development. Also the feedback we received gives us a chance to start thinking about possible ways of distributing this product thus earning a profit. At the moment we are studying different scenarios, in particular its release under one of open-source licenses and subsequently rendering paid services relevant to its service support, but that implies solving a number of other tasks which are still completely new to us. However, we can already draw the main conclusion, i.e. we have been able to find our own niche in the supercomputer industry international ecosystem having well presented to the dedicated market not only NPO Saturn and RGATU, but the Russian developers as a whole.”
NPO Saturn Research and Production Association (OJSC) is an engine-building company specialized in the design and development, production and after-market support of gas turbine engines for military and civil aviation, Navy boats and power-generating plants and gas-pumping units. The association is part of the All-Russian public organization The Union of mechanical engineers of Russia whereby the regional branch is headed by I. N. Fedorov, NPO Saturn CEO.
NPO Saturn is part of the United Engine Corporation (OJSC) and acts as the leader of the Civil Engines Division, a business unit of the UEC founded on 09.10.2012 as a result of integration of the following companies: NPO Saturn (OJSC), Aviadvigatel (OJSC), PMZ (OJSC), Metallist-PM (CJSC), Energetik-PM (OJSC), REMOS-PM (CJSC), Motoservis-PM (CJSC) and Zheleznodorozhnik-PM (CJSC).
