OREANDA-NEWS. November 27, 2013. The Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners approved purchase of an additional 15 compressed-natural-gas (CNG) transit vans. 

Contract for the vehicles, in the amount of USD703,468, was awarded to South Bay Ford, Inc., doing business as South Bay Ford Lincoln.

The vehicles will be used to replace 15 that are currently in use at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and LA/Ontario International Airport (ONT) that have reached the end of their useful life.  On average, the vehicles being replaced are 13 years old and have been driven in excess of 150,000 miles.

Airport officials said that replacement of these vehicles will increase reliability, operational safety and delivery of services, while decreasing maintenance and ownership costs.  

In 1999, the Board adopted an alternative-fuel-vehicle program that established guidelines governing identification and replacement of fossil-fuel-powered vehicles at its airports with alternative-fuel vehicles, where possible and feasible.

Today, Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) has the largest inventory of airport-based, alternative-fuel vehicles in the nation with more than 72 percent of its combined fleet powered by sources other than gasoline and diesel.
