OREANDA-NEWS. November 22, 2013. Students at Qatar Petroleum’s Dukhan English School (DES) recently took part once again in the “Hana-Iku Kids Program,” an environmental activity promoted by Bunduq Company Ltd., which is the operator of the El Bunduq oilfield on the offshore border of Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

The term Hana-Iku means “flower cultivation in Japanese, and the program raises the environmental awareness of students by boosting their interest in nature and increasing their appreciation of nature’s beauty. Under the program, the students have fun creating their own container garden or engaging in flower arrangement.

The hands-on program was first introduced to the DES in January this year, during which over 100 Year-4 students planted various types of flowering plants. At the second part of the program, which was held last November 5-6, up to 120 Year-2 students created beautiful flower arrangements using a combination of cutflowers, leaves and seeds.

The latest implementation of the Hana-Iku Kids Program at the DES was attended by Mr. Ahmad Saif Al-Sulaiti, Operations Manager-Dukhan Fields; Mr. Ahmed Y. Al Abdul Jabbar, Assistant General Manager of Bunduq Company Ltd.; Mr. Kimiya Nakamura, General Manager of the Planning & Marketing Department of United Petroleum Development Co. Ltd. (Japan); and Mr. Derek Andrew Jones, Headmaster of DES.

Also present during the event were the teaching staff of the DES and other senior officials of QP and Bunduq Company Ltd, including Mr. Hiderijo Inoue, HSE Manager of Bunduq Company Limited, Mr. Hiroshi Ishii, Qatar Representative of Bunduq Company Ltd cum General Manager of United Petroleum Development Co. Ltd. (Japan)-Doha Office; Ms. Ahlam Al Kathiri, CSR Specialist, and the Hana-Iku masters Ms. Michiyo Chiba and Mr. Hiroshi Ohta.

Bunduq Company Limited, which is based in Abu Dhabi, UAE, with a representative office here in Doha, is a joint venture involving BP and a consortium of Japanese companies. Dukhan English School, on the other hand, is one of the oldest English-medium schools in Qatar and it serves the educational needs of the children of QP employees who are based in Dukhan.
