During the meeting of the Council of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Prime Minister of Latvia Valdis Dombrovskis and ambassadors of 34 OECD countries discussed Latvia's experience in restoring the economic growth and the opportunities to transfer this experience to those Member States, which have to make fiscal consolidation and carry out reforms to restore growth.
Latvia is already successfully applying the OECD's expertise in such areas as education, the fight against corruption and governance of state-owned capital companies.
Angel Gurria, Secretary-General of the OECD emphasized that the OECD Member States' call for Latvia to join the organization, as well as Latvia's objective to join the euro area in a month and a half are indicative of effectiveness of the implemented reforms and regained competitiveness.
Angel Gurria welcomed the fact that the OECD has already made a decision on the "road map" of Latvia's accession that allows to start the practical work on the accession negotiations immediately. During the negotiations, 21 committee of the OECD will make a 360-degree evaluation of the Latvian national economy to identify the required improvements. The Prime Minister confirmed the commitment of the Latvian government to continue the accession negotiations in order to conclude them as soon as possible.
In his speech, V.Dombrovskis analysed the causes of the severe financial crisis in Latvia, the key directions for overcoming the crisis, and the main priorities at the moment when Latvia has been the fastest growing economy in the EU for the second year in a row. The Prime Minister received a lot of questions from the Ambassadors of Poland, Estonia, Chile, Iceland, Japan and Germany as well as from A.Gurria regarding different aspects of overcoming the crisis and restoring growth.
