Airport recognized for Sustainable Planning, Design and Construction Guidelines San Francisco-San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has been recognized with the 2013 “Airports Going Green” Award for incorporating sustainability into its guidelines for Planning, Design and Construction (PD&C). SFO staff members were present to accept the award and a ceremony hosted by the Chicago Department of Aviation.

“As an industry leader in airport sustainability, we continually strive to exceed the established standards,” said Airport Director John L. Martin. “Our Planning, Design, and Construction Guidelines reflect this approach, by surpassing basic compliance to achieve real innovations in our field. We are proud to be recognized by Airport Going Green for our efforts.

”While standard industry practices abide by CalGreen Building Code and U.S. Green Building Council LEED® Certification requirements, SFO created PD&C sustainability guidelines which go beyond such measures to incorporate provisions of the San Francisco Environmental Code in its language.

In May 2013, SFO unveiled a 10-Year Capital Improvement Plan, a series of construction projects which include the renovation of Terminals 1 and 3 and the creation of a new Air Traffic Control tower.
