OREANDA-NEWS.  Intensity of Akkuyu NPP cooperation with universities of Turkey increases day by day. Professors and students of universities, not only technical ones, are increasingly interested in nuclear energetics, and in particular in the Akkuyu NPP construction project. Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Electronics of Mersin University, Ph.D., Professor Caner Цzdemir, accompanied by the university lecturers, docents Alkan Alkaya and Evren Deрirmenci visited the Public Information Center (PIC) of Akkuyu NPP in the city of Mersin. Experts of the PIC by the example of exhibition models of the center told the professor about the Akkuyu NPP project and answered all his questions about the design of the power plant, fuel, and security systems. Caner Цzdemir received comprehensive answers and stressed that the Republic of Turkey needs nuclear power to meet the demand for electricity growing from year to year. The professor noted that each year 75 specialists graduate from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Electronics of Mersin University. Stressing that during the construction of the nuclear power plant electricians have to do a lot of work, Ph.D., said, “The students have a genuine interest in the possibility of participation in the process of a nuclear facility construction. The community of students acting on the basis of our university can develop joint projects with Akkuyu NPP in this direction”.

Director of Akkuyu NPP Information Center in Mersin, Mr. Faruk Uzel has noted that the Project Company attaches great importance to cooperation with Mersin and Toros Universities located in the region. “The project of construction of the Turkey’s first nuclear power plant in Mersin Province will provide employment opportunities for graduates”, said the Director of the PIC.

Akkuyu NPP Public Information Center was also visited by a group of students in number of 50 people from the Department of Electronics of the Toros University accompanied by their professors. Using the advanced visualization tools of the center classroom, the guests were shown videos of the design features and principle of operation of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant. The students learned from the presentation about the importance of the project of construction of the first nuclear power plant in Mersin Province, due to the rapid growth of energy consumption, which is caused by the active development of the industrial sector of the country. “WWER Technology used in the Akkuyu NPP project has innovative design features necessary for the compliance with safety measures at nuclear power plants. WWER-1200-type reactors, which will be installed at the power plant, belong to the latter type of reactors 3+ generation and are the most modern nuclear plants to date”, the Director of the PIC concluded. After the tour, the visitors of the Center received answers to all their questions. The students thanked the staff and the Director of the Center for the presentation of the project of Turkey’s first nuclear power plant, noting that they would necessarily advise their fellow students to visit the PIC and to familiarize with the benefits of nuclear energetics.
