Longest Civil Freighter Boeing 747-8F Delivers Olympic Cargo to Sochi
OREANDA-NEWS. Basel Aero, a part of Russia's industrial diversified group Basic Element, announces that AirBridgeCargo delivered the first 30 tonnes of Olympic cargo from Moscow to Sochi International Airport on Thursday by the longest Boeing 747-8F civil jet.
The Olympic cargo consisting of 12 pallets with bobs, eight pallets with photo, video equipment and special tools for cargo transportation was dispatched to Sochi International Airport, one of the Russian gateways, capable of accepting Boeing 747-8 Freighter.
The cargo was unloaded from the aircraft into seven Eurofura cargo vans. A unique mobile
cargo-container screener capable of checking of the cargo on-the-go was used at customs.
Previously, similar freighters were only operated by Moscow, Krasnoyarsk, Novosibirsk and Khabarovsk airports. AirBridgeCargo is planning to extend its cargo deliveries for the Sochi Olympics until the end of February 2014.
The Boeing 747-8 Freighter offers a range of 8,130 km allowing it to carry up to 140 tonnes of cargo at a maximum speed of 908 kph. It is the longest civil aircraft with a fuselage's length of 76.3 meters while the aircraft's wing span is double length of Boeing 737-700 passenger jets reaching 68.45 meters. This aircraft is considered to have no competitors in terms of fuel efficiency and ecological safety. The Boeing 747-8F performed its maiden flight in 2010, a year before it went on sale in 2011.
