OREANDA-NEWS. The Duke Energy Foundation has awarded a USD 50,000 grant to the Ohio River Greenway Commission to help complete the design for the final segments of the 7.5 mile recreational path.

When complete, the greenway will connect the communities of Jeffersonville, Clarksville and New Albany along the banks of the Ohio River.

The final segments in Jeffersonville and Clarksville requiring design work along the greenway include the portion in Jeffersonville from I-65 near Kingfish to Buckheads, and in Clarksville from Carmen Industries to Ashland Park.

Total engineering costs are estimated at USD 426,000, with additional contributions coming from a variety of state and local funds.

“Completing the greenway will promote a recreational environment for river access, while allowing each community the opportunity to build its own riverfront amenities,” said Phillip Hendershot, chairman of the greenway commission. “We’re grateful to Duke Energy for partnering with us to help complete this exciting project.”

“Providing an enhanced quality of life for the communities we serve is one of the goals of the Duke Energy Foundation,” said Pat More, Duke Energy south district manager. “This multi-use path will provide an alternative route for bicyclists, walkers and runners to commute to work, as well as preserve this segment of the riverfront for future generations.”

Design for these two segments of the greenway is expected to begin in spring 2014, with completion by fall 2014.

Duke Energy Indiana’s operations provide approximately 7,500 megawatts of owned electric capacity to approximately 790,000 customers, making it the state’s largest electric supplier.
