Allianz Analyzed Loss Proofs Filed to Company Regarding Road Accidents
OREANDA-NEWS. The Centre for Analysis, Monitoring, Methodology and Control of IC Allianz has analyzed the number of loss proofs filed to the company regarding road accidents in 2011 to 2013 and determined that most road accidents happen in March and on Tuesday. At the same time, on the notorious "Friday the 13th", the number of road accidents, according to the company's statistics, increases irregularly and insignificantly.
According to the statistics of IC Allianz, the most dangerous month for the Russian drivers is March. In this month, the number of road accidents increases approximately by 10 to 13% (as compared to the average monthly figure). In 2011, 6,298 road accidents involving the clients of IC Allianz were registered (as compared to the average monthly figure of 5,681 for this year), in 2012 - 5,936 (vs. the average number of 5,273), and in 2013 - 5,174 (with the average figure for January - August 2013 equaling 4,552) (Figure No.1)

Throughout the working week, accident rate is stably high as compared to weekends. According to the data for the year 2011, most accidents happened on Tuesday (10,963 accidents in a year), while in 2012 the leaders were both Tuesday and Wednesday (10,001 and 10,004 respectively). According to the current year statistics (January to September), the leadership once again returns to Tuesday (6,318). As compared to the average figure, the number of road accidents in these week days increased by 10 to 16%. The lowest number of road accidents occurs on Sundays (in 2011 - 7,074, in 2012 - 6,694, and in January to September 2013 - 3,884), which is 26-28% lower than the average number (Figure No.2).

The least accident-prone days of the year occur on big holidays. The largest decrease in the number of road accidents falls on 01 January, when there are 3.5 to 4 times less accidents than the average daily figure. There is also a decrease in road accidents (2 to 2.5 times) on 02 and 07 January, as well as 08-09 May and 31 December.
Should we be superstitious? The answer is no, if we analyze the statistics on accidents occurring on "Friday the 13th" for the last three years. In 2011 (13 May), accident rate grew only by 2% as compared to the average daily number of accidents. Indeed, in 2012, there was an increase in the number of road accidents on 13 January and 13 April (9% and 11% respectively). However, Friday 13 July 2012 exceeded the average just by 3%. In the running year (13 September) this figure even decreased by 41%, though it is possible that a small additional number of accidents occurring on that date may still be due to be claimed to the company (Figure No.3).

"Yet, while in Russia the statistics produces mixed results, in other countries the „Friday 13th“ does give some basis for superstition. For example, the analysis of statistics for the same days conducted by the experts of Allianz Group in Slovakia demonstrated an increase in the number of accidents by 22 to 57%. Most notable of such cases is 13 August 2010, when a powerful storm in Slovakia grew the number of accidents twofold (912 vs. 418 in the „ordinary day“). At the same time, in Romania, the most unlucky day is Tuesday the 13th. Our colleagues from Allianz-Tiriac, the Romanian unit of Allianz Group, having analyzed the accident rate on Tuesday the 13th for the years 2010 to 2012, note the ambiguity of data: in three cases the number of accidents exceeded the average figure (300 per day), while in other three days it was lower. The largest difference equalled 386 registered accidents (April 2010) vs. 220 (December 2011). At the same time, most accident-prone in Romania in 2010 - 2012 were February and Monday. The lowest number of accidents, like in Russia, occurs on days off and holidays (25 December and 01 January)", commented Mr. Alexander Samburov, head of sector in the Perspective Development Department of IC Allianz.
