Braskem Named Brazil's Best Company in Carbon Management
OREANDA-NEWS. The Company achieved the highest score in Brazil on the Carbon Disclosure Project, one of the world's most highly respected sustainability indicators for listed companies
Braskem is Brazil's best company in carbon management, with excellence in both performance and disclosure, according to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), an international nonprofit organization that measures and encourages companies to report information on their environmental impacts. Braskem attained the highest score from among the 58 Brazilian companies that responded to the CDP Climate Change Report 2013 , which is one of the world's most highly respected indicators for analyzing the sustainability of listed companies.
In the survey, Braskem achieved 99 on its carbon disclosure score (on a scale of 100) and “Level A” on the carbon performance score. In Brazil, most of the companies analyzed in 2012 complied with the requirement that they manage and integrate climate change initiatives with their economic strategies. However, despite the advances made, the country still remains behind other countries, such as South Africa and South Korea, in terms of development.
“Braskem's result demonstrates its commitment to increasingly sustainable processes and products. Growing with a focus on excellence in sustainability is an integral part of our business strategy. From 2008 to 2012, Braskem reduced the intensity of its greenhouse gas emissions by 13%. We will continue to focus on solutions in this area,” said Jorge Soto, sustainable development director at Braskem.
According to Juliana Lopes, CDP director for Latin America, the aim of the performance score is to highlight positive actions to combat climate change, and the high performance scores shows that the Company measured, verified and managed its greenhouse gas emissions. “The definition of and compliance with carbon reduction targets, as well as the implementation of emissions-reduction programs in both our direct operations and in our supply chain proved decisive in Braskem obtaining its high performance score, since they demonstrate the company's efforts to separate its growth from its emissions increases,” she said.
Sustainability Indexes
Braskem's stock is also a component of the Carbon Efficient Index (ICO2) of the BM&FBovespa - Securities, Commodities and Futures Exchange. Launched in 2010, the index is formed by component stocks of the IBrX-50 index that have adopted transparent practices regarding their greenhouse gas emissions. The index's weighting takes into account the level of GHG emissions efficiency as well as the free-float (shares available for trade in the market) of each stock. Braskem is also a component of the Corporate Sustainability Index (ISE) since 2005.
Internationally, Braskem is also a component of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index Emerging Markets, the sustainability index for emerging markets on the New York Stock Exchange, since its creation in 2012. The index's current portfolio, launched earlier this year, is composed of the stocks of 81 companies, of which only two are chemical producers. Of these 81 companies, 17 are Brazilian.
