Transaero Airlines Will Use iPad as Electronic Flight Bag
OREANDA-NEWS. Transaero Airlines is the first airline in Russia to receive an operational permit from the Federal Air Transport Agency to use the iPad as an Electronic Flight Bag - EFB Class1.The use of the EFB reduces the necessary volume of paper, which is not required during critical stages of the flight such as take-off and landing. It also optimizes the crew's work as well as increases fuel efficiency due to weight reduction.
To obtain the permit Transaero submitted to the Agency documents on the use of the iPad as EFB Class 1, the crew training program and test results on electromagnetic compatibility with navigation and radio aircraft equipment.
The specialized application MobileFliteDeckPro, developed by Jeppesen, provides pilots immediate access to enroute chart data and airport diagrams on the iPad.
“At present, more than 1,000 Transaero employees use this app. Nine out of ten Transaero pilots have an iPad and advanced application which contains, apart from navigation information, the Flight Crew Operation manual and meteorological and supplemental information. This enables pilots and the crew not only to prepare for the flight but also to have digital access to important documents in-flight”, according to the Transaero flight department.
Using the iPad as an EFB is only a small part of Transaero's environmental program aimed at environmental protection and the reduction of emissions.
Since 2011 Transaero has been implementing a special program aimed at defining the key factors for optimal fuel and energy efficiency. The program involves new procedures used as for flight planning so for operation. For the first year of implementation of the fuel monitoring procedure the overall volume of fuel tanked has reduced by 19,500 tons.
Transaero Airlines pays particular attention to fuel efficiency and emissions reduction programs. In 2008 Transaero was the first among Russian airlines to join United Nations Global Compact Initiative. Its participants, the leading global companies, undertake to comply with common principles of environmental protection. Transaero's fleet consists of aircraft with low fuel consumption. The airline's fleet development strategy is based on principles of fuel efficiency and environmental protection.
