Neste Oil Included in Dow Jones Sustainability World Index
OREANDA-NEWS. September 20, 2013. Neste Oil has been selected for inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World) for the seventh year in succession according to the official list published.
Companies included in DJSI World are considered highly committed to sustainable development and are selected on the basis of an extensive annual review carried out by the Swiss-based SAM Group. Neste Oil was commended in this year's review for its environmental management, occupational safety, and the way it manages its social impact on local communities.
"Sustainability is not only a priority for us as a business principle, but also because we see it as essential for the long-term success of our business," says Neste Oil's President & CEO, Matti Lievonen.
The review was based on performance in 2012, when Neste Oil focused on areas such as the sustainability of its supply chain and increasing its use of waste and residues as feedstock for producing renewable fuel.
Neste Oil has systematically increased its use of waste and residue-based inputs, and its R&D work concentrates on non-food raw materials and other inputs that can reduce land-use and make a significant contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
"Waste and residues already account for around half of the feedstock we use to produce our renewable fuels today," continues Matti Lievonen.
The renewable inputs purchased by Neste Oil are 100% traced back to the plantation or site where they originate from, and the company ensures that they have not been produced by clearing forestland, wetlands, or peat bogs and that the cultivation methods used comply with Neste Oil's social responsibility criteria.
"To ensure that this is always the case, we monitor our production chain with the help of both internal and external, third-party audits," says Matti Lievonen.
