OREANDA-NEWS. September 19, 2013. CLP Power Hong Kong Limited (CLP Power) announced the results of its second GREEN PLUS Recognition Award.

The programme, which gives STAR Awards for the best energy-saving performers, aims to encourage business customers, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and schools to operate in a green and sustainable way. The number of participants jumped from 400 last year to a new high of 2,400. Entrants came from a more diverse range of sectors than last year, falling into 12 categories ranging from supermarket chains, shopping malls and small to medium-sized enterprises to NGOs and schools.

The overwhelming response and support from cross-sectors reflect the success and strong recognition of the programme this year. The judging panel, which comprises representatives from the government, green groups, chambers and professional bodies, selected 38 finalists to receive trophies or certificates recognising their outstanding commitment to environmental protection.

Speaking at the award ceremony, Paul Poon, Managing Director Designate of CLP Power, said: “Hong Kong is a dynamic, modern city, and any business or organisation operating here highly depends upon a reliable and sustainable power supply. With an increasing number of development and infrastructure projects, which are vital to the continuing success of Hong Kong in the years ahead, it is inevitable that demand for power will rise. Nevertheless, we continue to meet that demand without building new electricity generation facilities for over a decade but adopted different measures to enhance our generation and network infrastructure.

“We understand that the community, including our business sector, has higher expectations today on the use of cleaner fuel and environmental conservation. That is why in the early 1990s, CLP Power adopted a diversified fuel mix policy including clean energy. With the government’s announcement of a public consultation on the fuel mix policy, we think it is important to strike a balance to meet reliable electricity supply and environmental standards at reasonable costs. With our history of more than a century in Hong Kong, we are in the best CLP Power Hong Kong Ltd 2 position to address the needs of any future fuel mix decision. The critical issue is to have sufficient lead time for us to put the necessary infrastructure in place.”

Mr Poon added, “CLP Power was introducing Demand Side Management programmes to help customers to save energy. One example is the Advanced Metering Infrastructure Pilot Scheme launched in mid this year which provides timely energy consumption data to help customers better manage their energy use and to encourage them to change their consumption behaviour.”

At the same ceremony, Director of Electrical and Mechanical Services, Mr Frank Chan, JP, said: “CLP utilizes their expertise to help different industries expecially SMEs to implement energy efficient programmes. This award programme provides a platform for award winners to share their successful experience in energy saving and also reflects the fruitful rewards for the effort spent over the past year.”

Activities launched under the CLP GREENPLUS programme since 2010 represent the first step in a long journey towards a more environmentally-friendly future. While the GREENPLUS Recognition Award programme rewards the outstanding results in energy saving of the participating organisations, CLP Power also plays a role by offering its expertise to help business organisations to go green and to change their consumption behaviour in order to achieve sustainable energy saving results.

Collaborative efforts to change the consumption behaviour are the key to the success of energy conservation. CLP Power will continue to join hands with different sectors to create a green and sustainable business environment in Hong Kong. At today’s ceremony, the winning organisations also shared the best green practices and innovative ideas with other attendees, helping to promote the greener use of energy in their respective industries.
