Panasonic Launches HDMI 2.0 Compliant Communication LSI
OREANDA-NEWS. Panasonic Corporation today has released the industry's first*1 communication LSI compliant with the latest HDMI[1] 2.0 specifications that enables optimal transmission of high definition 4k 50/60p[2] image data. The new chips will contribute to realizing devices that support high resolution 4k 50/60p video, as well as expanding the use of such devices in a wide field of applications.
HDMI 2.0, the latest High-Definition Multimedia Interface Specifications, significantly increases bandwidth up to 18Gbps and supports for the transmission of 4k (2160p), 4 times the clarity of the already widespread Full HD (1080p). This Specifications therefore allow for the display of ultimate resolution 4k 50/60p images via single HDMI Cable.
The new standard supporting the transmission of 4k video at 50/60p is expected to expand the application and adoption of 4k devices in various fields, including 4k large-screen monitors for broadcast and industrial uses and automotive displays. Panasonic's new HDMI 2.0-compliant communication LSIs, MN864777 and MN864778, facilitate the designing and developing of devices that support 4k 50/60p, and will contribute to the widespread use and adoption of 4k devices in a variety of areas.
Panasonic has started mass production of the new LSIs this month with a monthly output capacity of more than 1 million units. The company will also provide customers with the semiconductor IP to promote the further spread of 4k devices.
The new HDMI 2.0-compliant communication LSIs have the following features:
- Display of 4k 50/60p images in true ultrahigh definition
4k 50/60p images can be transmitted with existing Category 2 HDMI cables
- Simplified device design and improved interoperability
The LSIs support the scramble function to reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI)[3] and use Panasonic's own high-speed differential transmission technology to enhance transmission characteristic.
- Anticipated contribution to widespread use of 4k devices due to the compliance with the global standard
Available in two versions - MN864777 (24.0 x 24.0 mm) and MN864778 (20.0 x 20.0 mm), the LSIs can be used in various 4k applications, from consumer devices to broadcast, industrial and automotive equipment.
- Display of 4k images from existing Full HD video-source thanks to image enhancement functions (MN864777)
The image enhancement functions include 4k 50/60p Scalar[4] and Super Resolution Circuit[5].
Notes:
*1 For an HDMI 2.0 compatible semiconductor, as of September 12, 2013, according to Panasonic data.
