OREANDA-NEWS. This month, Vale completes two years of its logistics operations in ?Mozambique. The first train left the e coal mine for the Port of Beira in August 2011, carrying 2,100 metric tons of coal. This was a landmark moment in the history of both our company and the African country. At the time, the a railway line linking the mining town of Moatize to Beira had been out of service for a total of 30 years.

In the two years since operations began, approximately 1,600 transports have arrived at the Port of Beira, carrying a total of 4.2 million metric tons of coal. The objective now is to reach the Sena-Beira railway line's maximum transport capacity.

Nacala Corridor to increase transport capacity for production coming from Moatize

Another project of ours is the construction of the a Corridor, which will increase our logistics capacity in Mozambique. With a nominal capacity estimated at 18 million metric tons per year, the corridor will comprise 912 kilometres of railway line linking our mine in Moatize to Nacala-a-Velha Port in a, Mozambique. The railway will also cross g country Malawi. Construction work started at the end of 2012, and the corridor is expected to start up in the second half of 2014.

Investment and social development

Vale has invested over 1.2 billion dollars in the Nacala Corridor, and the project is expected to generate around 3,500 jobs - 82% of which are occupied by Malawians.

As well as coal, the railway will be used to transport other cargo and passengers, providing a safe and effective transport system for the local population.
