OREANDA-NEWS. August 09, 2013. Denver International Airport’s nonstop international traffic is up more than 17 percent in the month of June compared to the same time last year.

A year – to – date comparison shows an 8 - percent increase over the same six month period in 2012.

The increase is primarily due to United’s new nonstop international service between Denver and Tokyo, and Fort McMurray, Canada.

In addition, Icelandair increased capacity from four to six flights a week.

Overall June passenger traffic at Denver International Airport (DIA) declined slightly by 2.1 percent in 2013 compared to June last year.

A total of 4,716,309 passengers passed through DIA in June 2013, compared to 4,818,197 in June 2012. The year – to - date total decreased by 0.8 percent from 25,610,095 passengers during
the same period in 2012, to 25,396,324 passengers this year.

"Denver International Airport's strength is our domestic passenger network, and it serves us well as we work to attract a dditional international service,” said Manager of Aviation Kim Day.“Carriers are seeing the benefits of connecting through our airport, as well as the comparatively low cost to operate out of Denver. As a result, new flights to Tokyo, Fort McMurray and Reykjavik led to a significant increase in our nonstop international traffic over last year. We continue to increase our presence in the global market."

Also in June, mail, freight and express cargo operations saw a 7.4 percent decrease, from 42,322,037 pounds of cargo handled in 2012 to 39,197,902 pounds of cargo handled in 2013. There was a decrease in overall airport flight operations, from 54,036 in 2012 to 50,485 in 2013.
