Railway of Moldova to Reorganize by Splitting into 3 Business Units
OREANDA-NEWS. August 05, 2013. This was stated by the Minister of Transport and Road Infrastructure Vasile Botnari, noting that the talk is about passenger, freight transportations and rail infrastructure. He stressed that SE “Railway of Moldova” prepares its modernization plan, based on the actions of structural reorganization to attract investment to upgrade the rolling stock and infrastructure.
Vasilii Botnari said that it is necessary to optimize costs and create new opportunities for the development of the enterprise. After reorganization, each of units of “Railway of Moldova” will be responsible for their own specific areas, which will focus on the development of the sector. Vasile Botnari noted that the railway network in Moldova needs a huge investment in upgrading the rolling stock - passenger and freight cars, locomotives as well as infrastructure. It is vital to implement investment projects on railway electrification, construction of roads with narrow European track to attract new transit flows.
"At the moment we negotiate with a number of international partners, with support of which plan to implement the important investment projects in this area", - said Vasile Botnari. According to him, the ministry intends to evaluate current situation, trends of development and obsolescence of rolling stock and state of infrastructure. "On the basis of this evaluation we want to identify areas where investments are mostly required "- said the Minister.
He stressed that infrastructure projects, including restoration of the damaged section of road in Giurgiulesti-Cahul, the construction of the railway line, which will provide connection to the port Giurgiulesti to the rail of Romania, are already under way. The minister said that high expectations are connected with functioning of the international transport corridors, which in future will attract more transit traffic.
Vasile Botnari highly evaluated the accession of the state enterprise "Railway of Moldova" to the transport system Viking Train. The length of the railways of Moldova, operated by “Railway of Moldova” is 1157 km. The company has about 50 branches.
