OREANDA-NEWS. August 05, 2013. MMC Norilsk Nickel announces potential adjustment of plans for the Group’s preparation for 2013-14 autumn-winter periods.

Abnormal heat resulted in sharp decline of water level in Norilskaya river, which approached the lowest level in the last quarter of the century (1.18 m).  If such heat persists, water supplies in the river will be sufficient for only one and a half months. This will probably increase the burden on the local HPPs and as a consequence, limitation of power consumption by the operations. Significant reduction of energy consumption may be followed by possible adjustments in production plans of the Polar Division’s operations.

MMC Norilsk Nickel’s management in cooperation with Norilsk city services holds the situation under control. High alert regime was introduced on the extended Norilsk area.  All the measures required to prevent such scenario have been taken.

As reported by Alexey Ruzhnikov, Head of Norilsk Administration, "There are no concerns so far, water will be supplied both to public and housing facilities. No restrictions are introduced."
Alexander Ryumin, Director of the Polar Division of MMC Norilsk Nickel, commenting on the change of water level in Norilskaya river, noted: "Today we have a reserve of 90 cm at a loss of 1.5-2 cm per day. That is, we have at least two months before the moment when any serious risks may emerge”. According to Director of the Polar Division, all subdivisions of Norilsk Nickel and NTEK are supplied with water as required.

The leading hydrological institutions of the country are invited to resolve the situation. Currently, river channels deepening in water intake points is underway, alternative solutions for water inflow to water intakes are worked out.

In view of the significant increase in HPP load, Norilsk Industrial Area has adopted and is implementing activities to prepare power equipment for operation during 2013-2014 heating season.
