Eurasia IC Paid KZT18,3m in Respect of Earthquake in New Zealand
OREANDA-NEWS. July 24, 2013. On 22 February 2011 in New Zealand there was a great earthquake. The epicenter of the disaster was registered in the second largest city of the country - Christchurch, on the South Island. The damage which was caused with the tremors is comparable to the explosion of 15 kilotons of TNT. The magnitude of the first tremor was equal to 6.3. A series of other aftershocks followed after the first tremor, the strongest of which with a magnitude of 5.7 was registered after 14 minutes.
The Mayor of Christchurch said that the city is suffered great damage and that his recovery took care of other areas of New Zealand. The situation is complicated by the fact that the earthquake occurred in the middle of the day, when the center of the city was crowded. The earthquake caused significant damage to the infrastructure of the city. About 70% of Christchurch remained without electricity. When tremors hit sewage pipes, resulting in some areas of the city were flooded. Substantially bridges and roadbed were also damaged, which hampered access of firefighters and rescue workers to destroyed objects.
