OREANDA-NEWS. July 12, 2013. Tele2, an alternative mobile operator, has summed up January-May results of federal anti-fraud program. Over the period Tele2 has received about 3500 complaints connected with mobile scams. The company refunded about 480 thou rubles to subscribers who suffered from criminal actions.

Tele2 subscribers most often encounter text message scams: fraudsters send fake bank alerts saying their holders’ cards are blocked, requests to transfer the money received by mistake or top up some mobile accounts. Thus, around 80% of victims received such messages in January-May 2013.

The top two mobile fraud scam (17%) is called Wangiri. In this case the subscriber receives an incoming call from an unknown person but the call gets interrupted. He calls back and hears an answering machine that is aiming to keep him tuned as soon as possible. The call is redirected to the premium rate service that may charge up to 30 rubles per minute.

Another type of fraud involves short number scams. However, the number of such complaints has dropped and equaled 2.5% of the total number. This can be explained by strict rules that Tele2 sets for content providers. For example, premium subscription services (often used by criminals that lure inattentive clients) undergo meticulous verification procedure. Should there be any suspicions of provider’s unreliability, the service will not operate on Tele2 network.

Tele2 implements the anti-fraud federal program. The company informs subscribers, uses multi-level verification systems of information and entertainment services, blocks short numbers. In addition, Tele2 is actively cooperating with regulating and legislative bodies.

In March 2013, Tele2 launched an official website of the Mobile subscriptions service. The website lists only reliable content providers whose services were selected as part of multi-level verification.
