The San Francisco International Airport has been honored for “Best Single Social Media Promotion by a U.S. airport” by Travel + Leisure Magazine in their annual Social Media in Travel + Tourism (SMITTY) awards program. “Social media provides an important way for customers to share their travel experiences,” said Airport Director John L. Martin. “We are proud to be recognized for our efforts.” “We launched the SMITTYS last year simply to recognize innovation in social media, but the competition has also raised the creativity bar for travel companies,” said Rich Beattie, Executive Digital Editor of Travel + Leisure. “The increased level of originality really showed in this year’s entries — we saw new ideas on every social media platform. And the addition of travel bloggers has injected the awards with even more energy.” In its second consecutive win, SFO was recognized for its “#SFOHolidays” Postagram campaign, which invited participants to create holiday-themed postcards on Postagram to share on Twitter and Facebook. Airport volunteers dressed in Dickensian attire added to the holiday spirit of the campaign.
