DHL Provides Carbon-Neutral Service for Leipzig Orchestra
OREANDA-NEWS. July 03, 2013. DHL, the world’s leading logistics provider, will transport the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra’s entire equipment, from music stands to conductor’s baton to double bass, with its carbon-neutral service.
For 2013, DHL Freight has evaluated all transport related emissions for the renowned orchestra’s concerts in Bayreuth, Toblach, Ljubljana, Salzburg, London, Paris and Vienna. The resulting eight tons of CO2 will be offset via the verified GoGreen service through external climate protection projects.
“We’re glad that DHL forges new paths together with us. We have been relying on the company’s expertise for our worldwide concert tours for many years. When handling sensitive instruments, safety and reliability are a priority for us at every concert. By means of the GoGreen program, DHL mitigates the effects on the environment”, said Gewandhaus Director Professor Andreas Schulz.
7,17 tons of CO2 will be created by the transportation of approximately 65 cubic meters/2,300 cubic feet of freight for the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra concerts in the second half of the year. The amount equals the weight of 60 kettledrums. After the exact calculation of all emissions, DHL rounded up the total amount and will offset eight tons of CO2 via the GoGreen portfolio of certified international climate protection projects such as a water purifier project for the population of Cambodia.
An important milestone in our long-standing partnership
“The shift towards environmentally friendly transportation is an important milestone in our long-standing partnership with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. As the world’s leading logistics company, we have a corporate responsibility to contribute to the protection of the environment. The comprehensive environmental protection program GoGreen provides a particularly sustainable contribution in this respect”, explains Christof Ehrhart, Director Corporate Communications and Corporate Responsibility.
DHL has been the official logistics partner of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra since 2009, transporting all instruments and equipment on concert tours to performances in Europe, Asia and America. Additionally DHL takes care of customs clearance. For a smooth concert tour, detailed logistics planning is essential. This can take up to one and a half years.
The GoGreen program of Deutsche Post DHL aims to improve the company’s carbon efficiency by 30 percent by 2020. This means reducing the carbon emissions of every letter and parcel, each ton of cargo and every square meter of storage area used by 30 percent compared to the 2007 emission level. This objective also takes into account the carbon emissions of subcontractors in the transport sector, who account for the greatest share of all emissions.
