OREANDA-NEWS. June 24, 2013. The State agency for motor roads of Ukraine Ukrautodor is taking measures directed to liquidation of potholes on all main arteries of Ukraine by the end of June. Nowadays repair activities have been finalized on over 80% of highways.

This was announced by head of Ukrautodor Yevhen Prusenko at a briefing at the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.

“As of today, from the year’s start there have been fixed 5.2 million square meters of corrugations. It is almost twofold more than last year. In the process of repair activities there have been liquidated 4.2 million square meters. And almost 1 million square meters remain – exceptionally on public roads and in several regions – on the public roads. Everything possible is done to complete these activities by the end of June,” he informed.

Among the principal reasons of such intensive ruining of roads Yevhen Prusenko called excess by transport means of the standards of weight loading and emphasized on the need to intensify weight control targeting preserving of roads.

“It has a peculiar significance today, when the temperature of air has exceeded 30 degrees [Celsius]. And at this time bituminous covering, under the influence of [high] temperatures, becomes more yielding. That’s why annually relevant orders are issued which restrict traffic for transport means weighing over 24 tons and axle loading over 7 tons under the temperature over 28 degrees, in Belarus – under the temperature over 25 degrees.

“On the preliminary estimates, if not to restrict such traffic of heavy vehicles in summer under high temperatures it causes corrugations and leads to additional expenses for repair in the limits of UAH 2 bln. That’s why measures are taken for strengthening of weight dimension control,” Yevhen Prusenko stressed.
