OREANDA-NEWS. June 18, 2013. 180 foreign and local students were accepted to the 11 English Bachelor’s, Master’s, and integrated programmes at the University of Tartu in 2013/2014. A record number of 157 valid applications were submitted for the Software Engineering programme.

“361 valid applications were submitted for studies in Tartu for the new academic year, which is 30% more than in 2012,” says Ulle Tensing, Senior Specialist for International Studies of the university. Most applications were submitted by students from Finland, India, Ukraine, Pakistan, and Turkey.

The most popular English degree programme at the University of Tartu this year was Software Engineering, the number of valid applications for which has trebled compared to 2012. A total of 157 applications were submitted from 20 different countries. “Many students accepted to the programme have acquired their education at internationally renowned universities, such as the Nanyang Technological University, the Birla Institute of Technology and Sciences, and the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy,” says Tensing, expressing joy that candidates who have studied at distinguished universities are confirming the quality of the curriculum and the recognition of the University of Tartu in the rest of the world.

For the 2013/2014 academic year, it was also possible for the first time to submit applications to an English programme in Medicine, which proved to be most popular among students from Finland. “The level of students applying to the integrated programme in Medicine is still extremely high – this year, just like in earlier years, we had applicants who scored the highest possible marks in their international SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test),” said Tensing.

This year, more scholarships will be granted to students participating in English degree programmes than have in earlier years. “The University has applied for 21 DoRa Activity 9 scholarships and 17 scholarships from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ development and humanitarian aid programme for foreign students beginning their studies this fall,” says Tensing, adding that the IT Academy has also provided 14 scholarships for the best applicants to the Software Engineering programme. In addition, the majority of the English degree programmes grant tuition scholarships to students, meaning that full-time students do not have to pay the tuition fee.

Final admission lists will be revealed by autumn.
