OREANDA-NEWS. May 23, 2013. CEO Chung Joonyang received the Steelmaker of the Year award at the 2013 Iron & Steel Technology Conference and Exposition (AISTech 2013) held in Pittsburg, U.S.

He continued his schedule as a member of President Park Geun-hye`s business delegation, and will return on the 9th. During this visit, CEO Chung participated in the 60th anniversary gala in honor of the Korea•U.S. Alliance on the 7th in Washington D.C., followed by a breakfast meeting, and the roundtable meeting of CEOs of Korea and U.S. industries on the following day exchanging opinions on ways for the two countries to cooperate.

AIST (Association for Iron & Steel Technology), the globally prestigious international science and technology organization which established the Steelmaker of the Year Award, said CEO Chung Joonyang not only developed new technologies, secured safety and materials in the field, and led POSCO`s advancement globally, but also generated the greatest results in leading shared growth between the global steel industry and the steel consumption industry.

At the award ceremony, where AIST Chairman Peaslee and U.S. Steel Chairman John Surma attended, CEO Chung said in his acceptance speech said that AIST has been contributing greatly to the global steel industry by developing and promoting steel technology through various programs during the past 20 or so years, and continued that POSCO is also putting its efforts in responding to rising raw material costs, climate change and overcoming a lack of energy resources, and producing environmentally friendly economic steel through new technology development.

CEO Chung, at a press conference, answered questions on POSCO`s unique new technologies that are being developed to secure future competitiveness, background on securing competitiveness, and improving work efficiency through the Smart Work Place initiative. He also emphasized that anyone that pioneers the future with a dream, vision, and execution with passion can become a CEO, and that one can become a winner in all things by looking at the world with a positive mindset and carry out tasks with an owner`s mind.

AIST, which is based in the U.S., is a non-profit organization consisting of 16,000 specialist and student members of more than 70 countries with the goal of steel technology development and improving production, processes, and application, and develops and operates exchange and education of related steel companies, suppliers, and academia, as well as sustainable programs.

Recipients of the Steelmaker of the Year Award, which was first established in 1991, include ArcelorMittal Chairman Lakshmi Mittal, as well as Tata Group Chairman Ratan Tata, Nucor Chairman Daniel Dimicco, Gerdau Chairman John Peter, and Techint Group Chairman Paolo Rocca.
