Vale Employees in Canada Develop Fish Breeding Program
OREANDA-NEWS. Vale’s commitment to the environment seems to be having an influence on the attitude of our employees outside as well as inside the workplace. An example of this can be found in Canada where our Base Metals operations are based, producing nickel and copper.
Employees from the Sudbury mines released around a thousand young walleye fish last month into Ramsey Lake, contributing towards the recuperation of the biodiversity of Canadian lakes and rivers. The objective of this project is to encourage breeding in native fish species, mainly in areas that have suffered some kind of environmental imbalance. The initiative began when 4,000 rainbow trout were released into the Onaping River in 2012.
Bred in captivity, the walleye posed a further challenge for the group working on the project, as it is a natural habit of this fish to feed on its own species. The fish had to be taught to feed on pellets so that they could reproduce before they were released.
The project has future plans. Another batch of young walleye in its growth phase is currently being bred in a tank. It is expected that these fish will be released into the lakes in October.
