OREANDA-NEWS. May 01, 2013. ArcelorMittal Galati is the sole steel supplier for a new, 32-tower wind farm in Romania, which has the potential to generate the most megawatts of any wind farm in southeast Europe.

The new wind farm, Chirnogeni, is in the Dobrogea region of southern Romania. The project called for 7,500 tonnes of steel plate, all of which is being supplied by ArcelorMittal, from our site in Galati, Romania. Installation of the 80MW farm will start in August.

The customer, Emek S.A. of Greece, with whom we have had a good relationship since 2011, chose ArcelorMittal Galati as a supplier over other bidders not just because we are such a major supplier to the industry: “We were seen as a trustable steel mill that could meet and fulfil all their demands. We were chosen for our on-time deliveries, cost competitiveness, the high quality of our heavy plates and the location close to Greece,” said Aleksandar Rankovic, managing director, Flat Carbon Europe, ArcelorMittal Greece – our Greek operations played a key role in securing the contract.

Many major wind farms across Europe have been built using ArcelorMittal steel, including San Antoni project in Spain, Amaroni, San Biagio, Manfredonia (all in Italy), the Glenough and Gibbet projects in Ireland and Ardouval farm in France.

ArcelorMittal Galati itself is currently supplying plates for wind turbine producers in Greece, Poland, Czech Republic, Ukraine, India and Turkey and intends to further expand its market and reach this year.

Wind turbines are made almost entirely of steel, including the tower which uses between 150 and 180 tonnes of quarto plate, or heavy plate. ArcelorMittal Asturias in Spain is a major supplier of steel for the wind industry, as well as Galati.
