Members of BEA Group Fund Establishment of Firefly Centre in China
OREANDA-NEWS. April 30, 2013. The Bank of East Asia (“BEA”) announces that it held a ceremony together with the Shanghai Soong Ching Ling Foundation – BEA Charity Fund (the “Fund”) to celebrate the establishment of the first Firefly Centre donated by BEA staff members in Ao To wn Central Primary School, You County, Zhuzhou, in Hunan Province (the “Zhuzhou Firefly Centre”).
The ceremony was attended by a number of representatives, including Mr. Wen Bin, Deputy County Magistrate; Ms. Wendy Wong, General Manager and Head of BEA’s China Division; and Ms. Mimi Kam, General Manager and Head of BEA’s Human Resources & Corporate Communications Division; and Mr. Cartier Lam, Deputy Chief Executive of The Bank of East Asia (China) Limited (“BEA China”).
The Zhuzhou Firefly Centre was funded by donations from staff members of the BEA Group based in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, Malaysia, the UK, and the US. A total of RMB300,000 was raised through this Group effort with a further RMB50,000 provided by the Fund to complete the construction of the Zhuzhou Firefly Centre as well as to cover ongoing operational costs.
“We are grateful to the members of the BEA Group, who have made our Firefly Centre possible” said Mr. Wen, during the ceremony. “Our students are very excited to begin using the room, as most of them have never had access to a computer before.” Through its flagship Firefly Project, the Fund helps improve educational opportunities for children in rural areas of China by creating Firefly Centres – dedicated rooms that are fitted out with furniture, computers, and other educational tools.
In addition to being the first Firefly Centre in Hunan Province, the Zhuzhou Firefly Centre is the first to be established through donations raised by members of the BEA Group worldwide.
