Producers of Moldova Sell Apples 15-20% Cheaper than Last April
OREANDA-NEWS. April 10, 2013. This is reported by specialized Russian mass media. According to them, during the current season the prices never reached the past-year level. This is explained by rather weak demand for apples on Russian markets.
Despite quite affordable prices, for 8 months of the current season Moldova has managed to export 150000 tons of apples to Russia, 16% as compared with the past year. Moldovan producers explain the decline in apple exports by high competitiveness of Poland, which has occupied a top line in a list of suppliers of cheap and good apples to Russia as early as this autumn. Besides, Russia itself saw record-breaking volumes of the apple harvest this year.
Up to date, Moldovan producers have dispatched apples at MDL 6-7 a kilo, or EUR 0.38-0.44 per kilo. The greatest demand falls on the Idared and Golden varieties. Farmers of Moldova report about a large supply of apples and a low demand for them on the domestic market.
This, in its turn, indicates that a drastic increase in apple prices is hardly possible in the nearest future.
