OREANDA-NEWS. There are approximately 1.21 lakh encroachments on Railway land involving an area of 2337 acre. These encroachments came up on Railway land near tracks in Metros and big cities over the past many years. Railways maintain record of number of encroachments in its land.  Housing being a State subject, resettlement and rehabilitation of slum dwellers with proper civic amenities is the responsibility of State Government. Meanwhile, Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation has launched Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY) which envisages slum free city will be carried out by the respective State Governments. Initially, 250 cities will be taken up by the end of 12th Five Year Plan. Ministry of Railways will work with respective State Governments whenever they select city for rehabilitation & resettlement of slum dwellers under this scheme.
