OREANDA-NEWS. March 11, 2013. Remittances from abroad sent to private people via Moldovan banks recorded, in January, a significant increase of over 10 million dollars exceeding the 2009 pre-crisis level, according to data by the National Bank of Moldova (BNM).

Thus, Moldovan working abroad have transferred an amount of 99.42 million dollars in January, which is up by 21.4 per cent against January 2011 and up by 10.8 per cent against the pre-crisis level. Due to crisis, the remittances have dramatically fallen to 64.30 million dollars in 2009.

The World Bank’s data show that about 700,000 Moldovans work abroad. The local officials also confirm the data.

The money sent by those who work abroad continues to represent a driving force for consumption and for economic growth in Moldova.
