OREANDA-NEWS. OMZ Special Steels, part of OMZ Group, has completed installation and start-up operations of shell turndown rig.

The turndown rig is a mechanical device weighting 62 tons performing tilting rotation axis (the axis of symmetry) at 90°. The turndown rig requires for exploitation of two new turning-and-boring lathes (HNK hoisting capacity 200 tons) that will be installed in the second quarter of this year.

Public company VZMEO operated design, supply and installation of shell turndown rig. Total investment reached RUR 25 billion.

The equipment can turn over shells with diameter up to 5.5 m, height up to 6 m and weighing up to 250 tons. Hammered shells manufactured on OMZ Special Steels are used for manufacturing important equipment such as nuclear reactors, petrochemical vessels on Izhorskiye Zavody. In 2012 OMZ Special Steels developed producing of hollow ingots with twice the length shells (double shells) for manufacturing big-volume nuclear and petrochemical equipment. This is not only production costs minimization of mounted equipment for nuclear power stations and oil processing by saving metal and cutting down the number of welds on a tool, but also significantly improves safety and operating period.

New equipment for manufacturing big-volume shells is launched as a part of complex project “Development of machining facilities OMZ Special Steels based on the workshop #66”. This project will help the Company to provide customers finishing of metallurgical intermediates for later welding.

The Joint Stock Company OMZ (Uralmash-Izhora Group) is one of the leading heavy industry companies specializing in engineering, production, sales and service support of equipment for nuclear, oil and gas, mining industries, as well as special steel production and industrial services. OMZ Group’s facilities are located in Russia and Czech Republic. The Group is controlled by Gazprombank.
