OMZ Casted 30-Ton Ingot of Stainless Steel Using Siphon Method
OREANDA-NEWS. January 29, 2013. OMZ Special Steels, part of OMZ Group, has successfully casted an ingot of stainless steel 08Cr18N10T (AISI 321) weighing 30.5 tons using siphon method. Ingot of stainless steel of such mass has casted with siphon method for the first time. Toughness of stainless steels is higher than conventional brands, which requires higher ferrostatic pressure in the sprue casting steel this way. A special design of gating system for the casting of this ingot was developed by the experts of OMZ Special Steels.
Advantage of the siphon casting versus top casting is getting top quality ingot surface due to the entry of the metal from below. Metal raises relatively slowly and quietly, so ingots castes with siphon method have a smooth surface that does not require peeling-off and cleaning, which in turn leads to a costs reduction.
