WB Loans USD40 mn for Moldova to Support its Educational Reforms
OREANDA-NEWS. January 29, 2013. In the framework of the new project the World Bank will back the government of Moldova in implementing reforms to improve quality of national education and make it more efficient.
The Education Reform in Moldova is designed to support efforts of the government to improve quality of education in the country for the following 5 years, WB Permanent Representative to Moldova Abdoulaye Seck said. Enhancement of the quality and efficiency of the education system of Moldova is of a key priority for our country, since economic growth and progress are impossible without being based on human capital assets, WB states.
Well-educated labour force in Moldova will further creation of new jobs; facilitate improvement of a business environment and attraction of investments, which, in its turn, will help increase living standards in Moldova. The bulk of the funds, provided by WB, are meant for rehabilitation of infrastructure of 94 regional schools and their equipment with furniture, computers and other devices, the Ministry od Education of Moldova reported earlier.
In the framework of the program, trainings of teachers and managers, modernization of the information system for educational management appraisal and consolidation of the system of testing and evaluating knowledge will also be backed. The Loan agreement will be signed with the International Development Association, the part of the World Bank Group. The document has to be approved by Cabinet ministers and ratified by the Parliament. Moldova joined the World Bank in 1992.
The World Bank has approved 45 programs for Moldova so far with the total commitment of USD 910 mln. At present the WB portfolio for Moldova includes 11 active projects valued at USD 256 mln in total. Funds provided by the World Bank are spent to back education, social assistance, electronic governance, health care, water supply, agriculture, business development and other areas.
