Tata Steel Uses Building Envelope System to Combat Climate Change
OREANDA-NEWS. January 21, 2013. At BAU 2013, the world’s largest trade fair for architects and construction engineers in Munich, Tata Steel will be exhibiting products that demonstrate how steel can be used to combat man-made carbon emissions.
Around 40 percent of carbon emissions come from buildings, which is why sustainability is becoming an increasingly important point of consideration across Europe while designing buildings and improving their operational performance. As a leading European supplier of pre-finished steel products, Tata Steel holds a strong position in the design and manufacture of building envelope systems – the facades of buildings – and is developing systems that reduce buildings’ energy consumption dramatically or even transform them into mini power generators.

All Colorcoat products can play a significant role in the delivery of sustainable building solutions. The company’s pre-finished steel products are durable and aesthetic, and are ideally suited to incorporating renewable energy systems.
Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra and Colorcoat Prisma significantly outperform standard polyester products in terms of long-term durability and aesthetics. Their specification leads to fewer repaints and replacements of the envelope over a building’s lifetime, delivering better value for money and resource usage in the long term.
Both products meet the highest standards of UV and corrosion resistance – RUV4 and RC5 – and are backed by the market leading Confidex Guarantee, which provides assurance of up to 40 years without the need for mandatory inspections or maintenance. High-quality detailing and installation maximise building air-tightness and reduce the amount of energy required to heat or cool a building.
Using their knowledge, Tata Steel has been investigating ways to use building envelopes more intelligently to harness energy. The latest development, Colorcoat Renew SC, is a transpired solar collector that is fitted on new or existing buildings as an additional skin and provides a free source of renewable energy. Heat is collected and drawn in through a perforated surface and can be either fed directly into a building as ventilated air or ducted into a heating and ventilation unit to be used as a pre-heater to the main heating system. It has the potential to save up to 50 percent on heating costs with little or no impact on the environment.
