OREANDA-NEWS. January 15, 2013. According to the latest figures, in 2012 the Russian Railways’ infrastructure carried 1.0585 billion passengers, an increase of 6.6% compared to 2011. Long-distance passenger numbers rose 1.5% to 116.5 million, while suburban commuters increased 7.2% to 941,900,000, reported the press-centre of Russian Railways.

Compared to last year, passenger traffic on the Russian Railways’ network in 2012 increased by 3.4% to 144.6 billion passenger-kilometres, with long-distance passenger traffic up 2.2% to 113 billion and suburban traffic up 7.9% to 31.6 billion passenger-kilometres.

According to the latest figures, 86.1 million passengers were carried in December 2012, 3.8% more than in December 2011, with 77.1 million passengers travelling on suburban commuter trains, an increase of 4.1%, and 8.9 million on long distance journeys, up 1.4%.

Passenger traffic in December 2012 amounted to 10.3 billion passenger-kilometres, an increase of 1.9% on December 2011.
