Mostotrest Opens New Interchange Ahead of Schedule
OREANDA-NEWS. January 11, 2013. Two new overpasses at the intersection of Leningradskoye Highway and the Moscow Ring Road (MKAD) opened to traffic. Specialists from OJSC Mostotrest managed to complete the main construction work on the project in record time and open the new overpasses to traffic four months earlier than scheduled. Putting the interchange into operation will ease traffic congestion in the northern part of the city and improve transport accessibility to the Khimki district and Sheremetyevo International Airport.
The new two-lane overpasses with total length of 2.1 km will ensure the uninterrupted movement of vehicles, which favourably distinguishes this system from the traditional “cloverleaf” interchange. A left-turn overpass with length of 1.8 km provides direct access from Leningradskoye Highway to the MKAD heading west in the direction of Rublyovskoye Highway, while a right-turn overpass with length of 0.3 km offers direct access in the direction of Medvedkovo and Dmitrovskoye Highways. In addition to building the overpasses, the work also involved the reconstruction of the right-turn exit to the inner part of the MKAD, the exit for entering the inner part of the MKAD coming from the direction of St. Petersburg, and the turnaround exit that runs as an underpass under Leningradskoye Highway.
What set this construction project apart from others was the fact that work was conducted under dense traffic conditions without shutting down roads. During the construction work, the movement of vehicles along Leningradskoye Highway and other areas that were part of the construction zone proceeded normally without any stoppages or lane closures. In addition, the construction workers managed to effectively resolve a challenging problem – how to quickly move 19 high-voltage towers and more than three km of power lines that provide electricity to northern Moscow and Khimki. Specialists from Mostotrest utilized technology that can be regarded as construction “knowhow”: all work – solid-cast, concrete, metal – was conducted simultaneously. This also made it possible to considerably speed up the process.
