December 19, 2012 State Council of the People's Republic of China approved the beginning of works to construct Units 3&4 at Tianwan NPP, by submitting to National Nuclear Safety Administration of China (NNSA) the documents needed for obtaining a license for the construction of the new units.

The general contract for the construction of Tianwan NPP Phase II (Units 3&4, 1060 MW each) was signed in 2010 between JSC Atomstroyexport and jointly acting China Nuclear Power Engineering (CNPE), Jiangsu Nuclear Power Corporation (JNPC) and China Nuclear Energy Industry Corporation (CNEIC).

According to the contract, constructed by JSC Atomstroyexport Units 3&4 shall be analogous to Units 1&2, i.e. of VVER-1000 type, 1060 MW each.

Phase I of Tianwan NPP (Units 1&2) at Lianyungang city in Jiangsu province was commissioned in 2007. The plant was built upon AES-91 project. The power unit includes the reactor facility with VVER-1000/428 reactor type and K-1000-60/3000 turbine type with TBB-100002Y3 generator. Tianwan was the first NPP in the world with a “core catcher” installed for retention and cooling down of the melt core.
