SSE First Major Supplier Will Join Energy Bill Revolution Campaign
OREANDA-NEWS. November 27, 2012. SSE has become the first major energy supplier to announce its support for the Energy Bill Revolution, a public alliance calling for the Government to reinvest income from green taxes in measures to improve the energy efficiency of the UK’s homes, keeping them warm and lowering costs.
SSE joins the campaign on the day a report from Consumer Focus highlights that investment in energy efficiency is one of the best ways to boost the economy. The report shows that, by 2020, if just 35% of the public revenues from carbon pricing was reinvested in effectively targeted energy efficiency measures, nearly 2.7 million additional homes could be treated. This could have the additional benefit of creating up to 27,000 new jobs by 2015.
The Energy Bill Revolution is a movement made up of charities, NGOs, trade unions, consumer groups, businesses, politicians and public figures. Collectively, the group is campaigning for public revenues from carbon pricing such as the European Emissions Trading Scheme (EU-ETS) and the Carbon Floor Price to be reinvested in homes, providing billions of pounds to help insulate the UK’s homes.
Richard Westoby, Director of Energy Demand at SSE, comments: “Making our homes more energy efficient remains the most effective way in which we can manage the cost of our energy while reducing emissions. The welcome findings of the Consumer Focus report show that significant investment in energy efficiency is good for the economy as well as our homes. SSE is proud to join the Energy Bill Revolution in calling on the Government to do what it can to make this a reality.”
