Thirty Fellows Selected for 2013 TJ Park Science Fellowship
OREANDA-NEWS. November 13, 2012. The POSCO TJ Park Foundation presented the TJ Park Science Fellowship certificate to the 30 scientists selected as the `4th 2013 TJ Park Science Fellows` at the Seoul POSCO Center, reported the press-centre of POSCO.
The TJ Park Science Fellowship is a scholarship program started in 2009 and operated under the policy that, `science talent must be fostered for Korea, which lacks natural resources, to become an advanced country.`
At the ceremony, the 60 attendees included POSCO TJ Park Foundation Chairman Joonyang Chung, Joint Selection Committee Chairman and Institute for Basic Science President Se-jung Oh, Seoul National University Professor Jeonghye Noh, the thirty 4th TJ Park Science Fellows, twenty-one 3rd TJ Park Science Fellows, selection committee members of each field including Yonsei University Mathematics Professor Gyeongchan Min, Seoul National University Mathematics Professor Dohan Kim, POSTECH Chemistry Professor Byeonghyeon Kim, DGIST Professor Honggil Nam and others attended.
The TJ Park Science Fellowship aims to foster scientists in the basic science fields, and selects 30 members consisting of newly appointed professors, post–doctoral researchers, and Ph.D students in the 4 basic science fields—mathematics, physics, chemistry, and life sciences—sponsoring 70~75 million KRW for research throughout 2~3 years. First started in 2009, 120 scientists have been sponsored with 5.6 trillion KRW to this day.
Applications were received for one month starting on May 16th, where 301 applicants from 60 universities applied, marking a high competition rate of 10:1.
Twelve recommendation committee professors in the four fields of study review the research results and plan to select approximately 64 candidates, twice the number of actual nominees, who are then evaluated again by 152 scientists both domestic and abroad. The 12 professors then conduct interviews after receiving these evaluation comments and finally select 30 fellows.
The 4th TJ Park Science Fellows will attend a workshop until the 2nd in Pohang after the certificate presentation ceremony and lunch on the 1st. At the workshop, they will host presentations and discussions on the `resolution as TJ Park Science Fellows and the road of a scientist,` and also take a look at the establishment and growth history of POSCO.
