OREANDA-NEWS. October 22, 2012. Vladimir Yakunin, President of Russian Railways, took part in the ceremony to mark the beginning of railway services on the railway line between Tabriz - Azarshahr, which has been electrified jointly by Russian and Iranian specialists, reported the press-centre of Russian Railways.

"This is the first joint project between Russia and Iran in the railway sector, and I hope it will be a springboard for the intensive development of cooperation between our railway organisations," said Yakunin.

As part of the project, about 46 km of railway line and five railway stations were electrified. The new infrastructure is designed to transport students to and from the Pedagogical University of Azarshahr.

The line’s electrification will significantly reduce fuel consumption and increase the efficiency and comfort of passenger services.
