OREANDA-NEWS. October 17, 2012. POSCO has acquired certification of ISO 50001, an international energy management system standard, from Lloyd`s Register Quality Assurance, an international certification organization. This is the first in Asia`s steel industry, and second globally after Europe`s ThyssenKrupp, reported the press-centre of POSCO.

POSCO held the ISO 50001 Certification award ceremony on October 9th in attendance of Sanggeun Yu, head of the LRQA Korea office, and Giwung Seong, head of the Environment Energy Planning Team. The Company formed an energy management task force to acquire the ISO 50001 certification, and carried out training courses in stages to foster core members working in the field and to learn how to correspond to certification evaluations. Also, reflecting the opinions of internal specialists, POSCO set up an Energy Measuring Instrument Management Guideline, revised work standards, and developed an energy reduction tool program to establish a POSCO-type energy management system.

The newly developed energy reduction tool program was highly evaluated as a case for allowing easy benchmarking by utilizing the recently finished energy reduction task pool which was started in the year 2000.

ISO established the Energy Management System Standard in June 2011 in response to increasing demands to open corporate carbon information to the public and to strengthen carbon energy management according to increases in energy costs. ISO 50001 evaluates the systemization level of processes from establishing energy usage goals including the amount of energy used per ton of steel produced and energy used per unit process, energy reduction activities, monitoring, and management measures for certification, and strives for continuous improvements in activities to save energy.

By acquiring the ISO 50001 Energy Management Certification Standard in addition to the Quality Management Certification Standard ISO 9001 and the Environment Management Certification Standard, POSCO has now fulfilled receiving necessary certifications to become a future company.

Just like the quality/environment management system, POSCO will continuously receive on-site management and evaluations.

POSCO plans to proactively reflect examination recommendations and on-site improvement requests for essential cost reduction through energy reduction and stabilize its position as an environment friendly company.
